The map to the right shows the land granted after the Nine Years War. This war was arguably one of Louis' greatest wars. "Not only did it see the French navy reach its apogee, the army attain its greatest size, and Louis's generals win an impressive chain of victories, but this war also exemplified the fundamental purpose, pattern, and parameters of warfare during his personal reign." France had been brought to the negotiation table by war fatigue. Louis XIV., however, had not yet learnt the lesson; in 1701 he again would bid for European hegemony in
